A few steps away from Grand Place, the permanent artwork commissioned by the city of Brussels, offers a pause, a suspension, a breath amidst the hustle & bustle of the city center.

Mécaniques Discursives - Mural, Brussels

As if in a game without rules, the viewer is free to explore a whimsical world where human and animal figures, mechanical and geometric objects coexist in an endless dance.

While the passage of time seems to accelerate every day, Mécaniques Discursives offers a pause, a suspension, a breath amidst the hustle and bustle of Brussels’ city center.

As if in a game without rules, the viewer is free to explore a whimsical world where human and animal figures, mechanical and geometric objects coexist in an endless dance. A hybrid work blending the coarseness of woodcutting with the fluidity of digital images, it is displayed in two phases: in the day - a painted mural; at night - the interplay of light and shadow brings it to life.

Mécaniques Discursives is like a parenthesis between two epochs: Gutenberg’s and Big Data’s. By contrasting the oldest form of image reproduction with the latest digital technologies, the installation straddles centuries and contracts time.

Since 2011, Mécaniques Discursives has travelled the world - from Tokyo to Montreal, Cairo to Barcelona - adapting to each space it fills. In 2021, Brussels gave it a long-term base in the heart of its home city, a few steps away from Grand Place.
The artwork is visible daily at Boulevard Anspach 21.

This video-augmented mural is the very first permanent artwork of its kind in Belgium, showcasing the technological expertise of the studio Interval.
